“CHARLOTTE’S SHADOW”

Good evening everyone,

I am supremely excited to introduce a Canadian collaboration which has been 20 years in the making between co-authors Christine Quaglia, a Social Worker and Student Accessibility Advocate and wheelchair user (University of Windsor, Ontario), and Developmental Psychologist, Dr. Anne-Marie DePape, (post-doctoral work completed at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Toronto).

The beautiful illustrations are by Kenzie Edge (Graphic Designer, Fanshawe College, London, Ontario).

Here is one mission statement, as stated by the co-authors:

“Our book doesn’t include a character with autism, but serves as a starting point for discussions with young children about disability.

One goal of our book is to provide representation so that children can see themselves reflected in the characters they read about.”

This is the charming story of Shadow (the dog) and his “Superhero” owner, Charlotte, all told from his point of view! Shadow accompanies Charlotte on everyday adventures everywhere as her trusted companion.

We don’t often see this kind of bond and relationship reflected within a children’s book.

Representation really DOES matter, and what better way to bring awareness to others than via the world of children’s books and storytelling?

I was drawn to this book specifically as a share a passion for wanting to spread disability awareness to the younger generations via storytelling.

I can also fully relate to the adventures in the book via my own 2 autistic daughters.

In striving for a spirit of inclusiveness, disability awareness, and also acceptance,I feel strongly that children’s books are very powerful tool in the hands of siblings, their classmates, and their educators.

We would be honoured if you would consider purchasing this book, not only for yourselves, but also as gifts.

On a personal note, I have a Charlotte too! This daughter of mine is a huge animal lover….This book reminds me of how much many of us value or depend upon our furry companions for emotional support, comfort, and/or assistance with daily living.

It just warms my heart to be able to share a passion project with you all today.

Whether you have a Charlotte or not, this book makes for some excellent bedtime reading; may it encourage dreams of a more inclusive world too!

In doing so, you are participating in helping to create a world that is more accepting and accommodating of all individuals with exceptional needs. Please join us in our efforts! This is vital work! This means the world to us!

Please hurry though, as quantities are limited at this time.
